Fall TV 2014: ABC Picks Up Two Racially-Themed Comedies
ABC picked up two new comedies today for the 2014-2015 season, including one from Don’t Trust the B—-in Apartment 23‘s Nahnatchka Kahn (a way underrated show; Google it). The title, unfortunately, is Fresh Off the Boati. Here’s hoping Kahn mines the laughs as intelligently as she did on B—- and doesn’t let this come across as a Dads-like attack on race.
The cast includes Constance Wu and Hudson Yang. It’s the 90’s and hip hop loving Eddie is growing up in suburban Orlando, raised by an immigrant father who is obsessed with all things American and an immigrant mother who is often bewildered by white culture. With his father owning and operating an All-American Steakhouse chain, this loving family of FOB (“fresh off the boat”) Taiwanese Americans try to live the American dream while still maintaining their cultural identity and sense of family.
ABC also picked up comedy Cristela, described as “Sixth-year law student Cristela pushes herself towards her ambitious legal dreams — often against her traditional Mexican-American family’s wishes.” Bland enough. Hopefully they can give us more to sink our teeth into as we progress.
Race, though… that’s becoming a thing this season. I am intrigued…
Oh, and they renewed Tim Allen’s Friday night performer Last Man Standing for a fourth season.
