best new voice [tv] (sofa awards 2012)

December 30, 2012

The ninth annual sofa awards… keep coming back as more recipients are revealed throughout the rest of the year.

7In December 2011, Forbes Magazine ranked Nashville, Tennessee as their #3 City of the Future. Somewhere Callie Khouri was dancing with glee. Khouri, the Oscar-winning writer of Thelma and Louise, is also the brainchild behind Nashville, the soap-musical hybrid from ABC that earned the best reviews of any new show this season. I helped write those reviews and stand behind the accolades. In fact, I applauded ABC for “[choosing] a city other than New York or LA for a showbiz-set drama… and that no one is painted as a backwoods hayseed… since that is the primary depiction of Southerners in televised arts.” I was right then and it’s worthwhile to say it again, which is why I did.

Perception is significant and I have noticed that a lot of people have expressed doubt in the show because they aren’t fans of country music. But, as I always point out, this show is about country music as much as Friday Night Lights was about football. There are grander themes being told and that is the difference. This isn’t Real Housewives of Belle Meade. It’s a story about a woman who is fighting to keep her career relevant in a changing marketplace. It’s a story about a young girl who had ideals and goals, but was swept off her feet in a sea of instant fame; basically, she had to run before she learned how to walk. It’s the story of trial and error, of love and life, of effort and fail. And, I will admit, to be fair, the music is good stuff. No lie.

Yes, I chose a music piece right after saying it’s not all about music. But watch those eyes, the faces, the acting!
