best thing to hit reality tv since nene leakes (sofa awards 2012)

December 27, 2012

The ninth annual sofa awards… keep coming back as more recipients are revealed throughout the rest of the year.

32Her time on The Voice was cut short, but that’s okay. I hear she’s fielding offers from big name producers, managers and label heads. Amanda Brown will be just fine. After a blind audition (covering “Valerie,” a song made semi-famous when Amy Winehouse covered it; the original is sung by an English rock group called The Zutons) that only netted one turn-around (thanks, Cee-lo), she came out swinging in the battle rounds, tearing into Mariah Carey’s “Vision of Love” with the ferocity of a mama lion whose cubs were being threatened. The great thing about Brown is, though, that she did so with such ease that one would think she was humming while tying her shoes. That, ladies and gentlemen, is talent.

293871_10151154414409069_685304951_nTo clear things up for the uninitiated, when Brown finished her battle with Trevin Hunte, all of the coaches were cheering. Adam Levine was standing on his chair, ready to pounce and add her to his team (he did). The follow up collection of songs – “Dream On,” “Spectrum,” “Stars,” “Someone Like You,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and “Here I Go Again” – reflected both her church upbringing and her love of rock and roll. It was, without question, the strongest streak of song choice selection on reality TV singing competitions since Melinda Doolittle stormed through American Idol back in season six. To be very clear: Doolittle should have won as well.

Oh well, Doolittle has found her niche and embraced it. And can anyone tell me that The Voice season 1 winner Javier Colon (who I do adore, for the record) is having a better career than she is right now? Nope. That’s what I thought. So, here we go again, Amanda Brown. The world is at your fingertips. Dream On, baby! Tell Adam Levine you want to do a project with Maroon 5. Get in the studio and give us your masterpiece. We know it’s in there. Hell, record your version of the Great American Songbook, but cover classics from Aerosmith, White Snake, Guns & Roses, Poison, Van Halen, Def Leopard, Twisted Sister, you get the picture. If you need help with more, call my sister. This is her wheelhouse. Amanda Brown, get to work!! We’ll buy the album. We’ll pack the stadiums. We’ll be there for you.

To clarify this award, Amanda Brown ≠ NeNe Leakes. But, NeNe knew how to catapult that ratchetness she was espousing on Real Housewives into a real career. Brown, as well, is a standout among also-rans.
