best reason to partake in sex and drugs. and sushi. (sofa awards 2012)

December 23, 2012

The ninth annual sofa awards… keep coming back as more recipients are revealed throughout the rest of the year…

30When B. Slade decided to take his particular brand of crazy on the road, folks from Venice Beach to Chicago were snatching up tickets. Where else could they experience the sonic wonder that is Slade’s voice, mixed with the onstage shenanigans that he’s been known for since switching up his public persona post-Tonex? Add in the extra excitement of having those sangin’-ass divas KimberlyNichole and Inaya Day share the stage for the New York show and it became evident that the Sex, Drugs & Sushi Tour would officially be off the proverbial chain. And that it was.

The Manhattan show opened with singer/songwriter Nikko Sherard, followed by up and coming Boston-based rapper JustKC. Jessica Betts, winner of Missy Elliott’s Road to Stardom, took the stage next, showcasing her rich vocals. After a brief intermission, emceed by comedienne Tammy Peay, KimberlyNichole took the stage, obliterating any reason to ever again listen to the White Stripes’ version of Seven Nation Army.

The excitement kept building, with dance music icon Inaya Day turning Shirley Murdock’s “As We Lay” into a rip-roaring ridiculous good time. And at some point during her second song, Vanity 6’s “Nasty Girl,” she took flight and let go. I looked back at my tweets during the show. A sample:

@josephrileyland: @inayaday has taken us to church, the club and beyond. #fuck

After Day whipped the crowd – including Valerie Simpson and Jonté – into a frenzy, B. Slade took the stage, hitting us with his most over-the-top, beat-filled, sonically-confusing singles first. He easily fed the hungry crowd more of what they were clamoring for before settling in and doing some slower tempo songs that gave him a chance to exercise that voice of his.

I didn’t get any sushi during the event, which did disappoint, but the show was hosted by Kevin-Anthony of B2: Productions and he certainly entertained between songs. So there was that. It was a good show. If you were there, you know. If you weren’t, well I can’t be in charge of getting you to every must-not-miss event in the city.
