Review: The New Normal

NBC is previewing the most controversial(?) show of the fall season, The New Normal. I added that question mark because while Utah might have a problem with the show being about gay characters, no one else has really seemed too concerned. It’s on Hulu now. Watch it below and see my comments at the bottom of the page…  The show debuts on September 11.

Ryan Murphy. He’s certainly good at making shows (Glee, American Horror Story, Nip/Tuck, Popular) that generate a lot of buzz. Add to that list The New Normal. Obviously, I am supposed to like this show. Which is why I went into it with caution. Anything that pre-determined is sure to disappoint. And, well, it does at times. As with any Murphy project, there are hits and misses. Sometimes those hits and misses happen in the same scene. It’s an interesting paradox. When he gets it right, he is dead-on. The relationship between Bryan (Andrew Rannells) and David (Justin Bartha) is quite possibly the most realistic gay romance on TV. When he gets it wrong, though, it’s a mess. Bryan wants a kid so he can dress it up? Yes, I know plenty of gay men who would pull that one… for a day; maybe two. And then they would get over it. Using that as whim as the crux of the show seems forced to me.

Nene Leakes leaves behind Roz Washington and marks her first real role as Bryan’s assistant, Rocky, who wears 6 inch heels despite being an Amazon to start with. Her acting is shaky, but I have a feeling she will get the hang of it. She’s a hit and miss herself, with plenty of people tuning in just for her and plenty not watching just because of her. I say do your thing, girl. You’ve certainly been working at generating the celebrity. Ellen Barkin plays the Archie Bunker of the group, which is interesting for anyone who follows her Twitter feed.

Will it get a spot on my DVR? I think so. For now. Glee burned out so quickly. I am not sure if I want to dedicate the time. I will give it a chance, but it might just be OnDemand. The New Normal airs on Tuesdays at 9:30 PM EST. The pilot will be broadcast on September 11.
