Review: The Mindy Project

Fox is giving a preview of it’s most-buzzed about new series this fall, The Mindy Project, on Hulu. Watch it below and see my comments at the bottom of the page… This preview will only be available through September 9. The show debuts on September 25.

Okay, so here goes: I don’t know Mindy Kaling. I despise The Office, so I never watched it when she was on the show, and after a quick IMDB search realize I have never seen anything else she was in. I have heard she has a hilarious book and a huge Twitter following and that she’s a Tina Fey/Amy Poehler type. For those reasons – and because she’s bringing some diversity to the small screen – I have been looking forward to watching this show. Was it worth the wait? Yes… and no.

The concept of the woman expecting her life to play out like a romantic comedy is definitely not far-fetched. We see that all the time in real life. The fact that it actually is going to play out like a romantic comedy certainly makes for good comedy. Kaling is cute as can be and comes across as Everywoman; she’s funny, flawed, a bit neurotic but most of all, relatable. She also does all of the heavy lifting in the pilot. The supporting cast – which includes Anna Camp (she’s certainly making the rounds) and Chris Messina – doesn’t do much of anything. I’ll look forward to seeing where they go with them. I also would be remiss to say that I wasn’t particularly liking Kaling’s character until the end when we see that she actually is good at her job. She needed that qualifier. I’m better now.

Will it get a spot on my DVR? Definitely, as of now. Fox has definitely stepped up their game when it comes to comedies. The Mindy Project airs on Tuesdays at 9:30 PM EST. The pilot will be broadcast on September 25.

I love this green sofa that Fox has used in promotional shots all summer long.
Of course, I didn’t see it in the pilot anywhere. Heartbroken.

Don’t know about the show but I also love the sofa that Fox used in the promo shots. Anyone know where to get this sofa?

It’s cool to see what someone who doesn’t know Mindy from her other projects thinks about this show. It looks like you came to pretty much the same conclusion as I did, as someone who has been a fan of hers for ages. I agree that it was important to see her being good at her job at the end. Without that, the whole thing would have fallen flat for me. I’m looking forward to watching this show with my Hopper, since I work late nights at Dish. A couple of my friends and I have been talking about how excited we are to see this show, so I’m glad I won’t have to worry about being out of the loop! Oh, and if you find out where that sofa came from, definitely let me know!
