Little Boxes, Just the Same

July 2, 2012

SPOILER – I’m talking about last night’s season premiere of Weeds. If you haven’t watched and you read this… you want me to spill the beans. Or, you’re not too bright. It’s that simple.

Little boxes on the hillside,

Little boxes made of ticky tacky,

Little boxes on the hillside,

Little boxes all the same.

There’s a green one and a pink one

And a blue one and a yellow one,

And they’re all made out of ticky tacky

And they all look just the same.

And the people in the houses

All went to the university,

Where they were put in boxes

And they came out all the same,

And there’s doctors and lawyers,

And business executives,

And they’re all made out of ticky tacky

And they all look just the same.

And with that, we are back in business. Weeds returned last night for their eighth and final season, with quite literally, a bang. Nancy was shot. In the head, no less, and left in a coma. Andy had sex with her sister Jill in the ICU unit. Doug felt up a comatose Nancy. And the shooter is Nancy’s dead husband (the DEA agent, not the drug dealer or Andy’s brother), Peter Scottson’s son. Apparently he’s still mad that his father left his mother. Or maybe he’s mad because she became a lesbian and got lost in the Seattle Grace parking lot, never to be heard from again. Either way, we have an interesting road ahead.

The significance of the song lyrics, however, is Weeds‘ return to form. A lot of viewers didn’t care for the path the show has taken (I, for one, am not one of those viewers; I love that Nancy kept painting herself into corners), but should be happy that it appears to be headed back to the suburbs. I have heard rumblings of several original cast members returning, and we all have our fingers crossed that the Botwin family continues to lead their exaggerated, crazy life, full of twists and turns.

Tune in on Sunday nights to see what happens next.
