Lifetime Picks Up Cherry’s Maids
It’s a new era of television, folks. Back in the day, the Big Three networks made their pilots, chose the ones they wanted and discarded of everything else. No one really knew what was going on in the process, save for a handful of people in the industry. Not today. With every pilot casting seemingly worthy of a news article, we follow the process from inception to the screen (sounds like a good reality TV show to me… OWN, are you listening?). Now, fans get excited about potential new shows, without ever having seen even a snippet, and when they don’t get picked up, go ballastic on the various entertainment websites that are reporting on the subject.
This past pilot season, high-profile shows like Shonda Rhimes‘ Gilded Lilies, Roseanne Barr‘s Downwardly Mobile and the Tony Shalhoub/Allison Janney-fronted Friday Night Dinner all made their way to the trash heap. But, Marc Cherry‘s Desperate Housewives 2.0, Devious Maids, fought its way out of said trash and has found a new home. Initially rejected by ABC, the show will make its debut on Lifetime in 2013. It’s been picked up for a 13-episode season. The ensemble includes Susan Lucci (All My Children), Ana Ortiz (Ugly Betty), Judy Reyes (Scrubs), Dania Ramirez (Entourage), Roselyn Sanchez (Without a Trace), Grant Show (Swing Town), Brianna Brown (Homeland), Edy Ganem (Livin’ Loud), Rebecca Wisocky (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (Damages), Tom Irwin (Grey’s Anatomy), Mariana Klaveno (True Blood) and Drew Van Acker (Pretty Little Liars).
Regarding the announcement, Sharenow and Nancy Dubuc, President and General Manager of Lifetime Networks, jointly said, “We are thrilled to be getting into business with one of entertainment’s true visionaries. This show and Marc Cherry’s unique story telling voice perfectly articulate Lifetime’s strategy of attracting top-tier creatives with their most original and exciting projects.”
“Marc Cherry is a visionary, and we are honored to share his newest inspiration, Devious Maids, with Lifetime,” said Barry Jossen, Executive Vice President of Creative and Production, ABC Studios. “Devious Maids is a perfect series for ABC Studios to continue its successful collaboration with the incredibly talented team at Lifetime.”
Based on the hit Mexican telenovela Ellas son la Alegría del Hogar and produced by ABC Studios, Devious Maids will be executive produced by Marc Cherry (Desperate Housewives), Sabrina Wind (Desperate Housewives), Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives), Paul McGuigan (Scandal), Larry Shuman (Kissing Miranda), David Lonner, John Mass, Paul Presburger and Michael Garcia.
Devious Maids joins Lifetime’s growing portfolio of scripted dramas that includes season six of the highly rated Army Wives, also produced by ABC Studios; the recently renewed hit The Client List, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt; and the critically acclaimed comedic drama Drop Dead Diva, which launched its fourth season this month.
