First Look: Whitney Houston in Sparkle

April 2, 2012

What could have been…

Today TriStar Pictures released the first trailer for Sparkle, the much-anticipated final film from the late, great Whitney Houston. Set to open on August 17, the film chronicles the story of three singing sisters from Detroit who form a girl group during the 1960s Motown era. The original 1976 version of the film was set in Harlem in the 1950s. Both are loosely based on The Supremes. Rising director Salim Akil (Jumping the Broom, The Game, Girlfriends) also co-produced the film with wife Mara Brock Akil (creator, The Game, Girlfriends).

As with many prestige Black films of late, the cast is filled with familiar names: Besides Miss Houston, Jordan Sparks, Derek Luke, Omari Hardwick, Mike Epps, Cee Lo Green, Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter, Vickie Winans, Michael Beach and Terrence Jenkins all worked on the feature.
