Esperanza + Algebra = Pure (Black) Gold

February 5, 2012

Last year’s surprise Grammy winner for Best New Artist (partially because it was her 37th CD), Esperanza Spalding, is following up with what promises to be another masterpiece. This week she debuted the video for her first single, “Black Gold,” off her new album Radio Music Society (out March 20) on BET’s 106th and Park. Featuring vocals from Algebra, it’s a beautiful song, with great harmonizing, a strong message and a catchy melody that will get into your head and stay there. And the video? I love. They get it right on so many fronts: the father with his sons, the history lesson, the English lesson, cooking dinner: stereotypes are shattered. Tie in the B-story, with Spalding and Algebra hosting a just-before dusk concert on the block that eventually dad and sons make their way to, and you have a video that makes sense, with a positive message to coincide with a song that’s doing the same thing. I really am feeling this video right now. What about you?

Reggie and I went to see her at Highline maybe… 3 years ago? Something like that. She was really really good. Love her vibe, on-stage persona.
