Terra Nova: I Give Up

December 13, 2011

As harsh as it gets...

If any of you know Steven Spielberg, please, I beg of you, call him and tell him I said to stop signing his name to every Tom, Dick and sci-fi show that comes along. We have been trained to believe that Spielberg = quality, so when Fox announced that they had not only bought the pilot for this new show called Terra Nova from Spielberg, but instead had given an unprecidented thirteen-episode order, we were clearly intrigued. After much waiting and anticipation – the show was scheduled to be aired in the spring of 2011, but was bumped back to fall 2011 – we saw the pilot and many were so impressed with the concept that they allowed for so-so storytelling. But now, with only two hours to go before that initial thirteen episodes are over, the so-so storytelling has weakened the show so greatly that I don’t think they can fight back.

A couple of weeks ago, I decided I wasn’t sure if I could keep up, as the primary family is full of idiots and the stories the writers create are for children. To be honest, after this week’s debacle, I have decided to fully and openly beat a dead horse and pick on them while they’re down. Terra Nova is a bad show. So bad, in fact, that it should come back as a cult classic sometime in the 2020s.

Every summer, we get an onslaught of big-budget blockbusters that pulls in movie-goers in droves. The plot is typically weak, but there’s so much action going on that we don’t notice. On Terra Nova, instead of all of that action, we get teenage daughter Maddie looking for what amounts to a plug for her fancy future iPad. Or younger daughter Zoe missing her pet dinosaur. Or something equally as banal. With nothing exciting going on on the screen, there is plenty of time for viewers to let their minds wander. Which, for the record, has to lead somewhere more exciting than what the Shannon family does on a weekly basis.

And again, why are the Shannons even on the show, if the end game is really about the rich people in the future trying to plunder Terra Nova for its vast resources, Commander Taylor versus his son? I don’t get it. I don’t like it. And I don’t support it. With that, I will not be watching the season? series? 2-hour finale. Instead, I will be watching T.I. and Tiny.
