The Artist In, Clooney Out of Spirit

November 29, 2011

And the awards keep coming… after last night’s Gotham Awards were announced, this morning the New York Film Critics Circle have been laboriously tweeting their winners. You can see those winners by checking out my twitter feed. Also this morning, the nominees for the Independent Spirit Awards (held the night prior to the Oscars) were announced.

As always, The Independent Spirit Awards list has a few surprises. In particular, the omission of George Clooney in the Best Actor category for The Descendants is surprising given his front-runner status. I do see Michelle Williams for My Week With Marilyn (as expected) and Elizabeth Olsen and John Hawkes for Martha Marcy May Marline (again, as expected), so that’s a good thing. The Artist, the black and white, silent film picked up a leading five nominations. As the awards season rolls on, we’ll the trends and who’s gaining in popularity, etc. For now, you have a good list of must-sees to start with though.
