Silent Film Courts Oscar

August 25, 2011

The Weinstein Company manages to always land a handful of Oscar nominations and based on the critical praise being heaped on their newest entry, the streak won’t end this year. The Artist, directed by Michael Hazanaviciu, was a crowd-pleaser at Cannes and picked up a prize for Best Actor for Juan Dujardin. Co-starring Bérénice Bejo and John Goodman, the film tells the tale of a couple of 1920s silent film stars as they cope with the introduction of talking pictures. And yes, the film is in black and white. And yes, the film is silent. And yes, that will turn off a lot of viewers. But yes, that will also bring in a lot of viewers. I, personally, cannot wait to see it. It certainly sounds more intriguing than another remake of some 1980s movie that I didn’t watch then, so certainly won’t be watching now.

Watch for yourself.
