Showtime’s SHORT stories: Small Films. Big Ideas.

Art comes in many forms. Some are easier to categorize; others are not. Short films fall into the latter category. Some are, quite literally, shortened versions of a full-length feature film. Others are cartoons. Some are the equivalent of a music video. The field is wide and selections vary greatly. With that, I was intrigued to learn that Showtime reached out to their favorite cutting-edge content creators from across the internet and assigned them a rather simple (yet decidedly deceptive) task: tell a short story in an innovative way. The results of this study can be found on Showtime’s website.

The talent charged with creating these SHORT stories include some of the internet’s top visual artists, animators and filmmakers. Academy Award nominee Don Hertzfeldt (Rejected, Best Short Film, Animated), YouTube superstar Levni Yilmaz (21 million hits and climbing) and renowned artist PES are among the creative geniuses behind these groundbreaking shorts. In addition to airing on Showtime, the seven short films will be available on Showtime On Demand, mobile devices and, again, through the Showtime website.

The seven selected SHORT stories are:

* The Deep by PES
* Wisdom Teeth by Don Hertzfeldt
* Goodnight Cleopatra by Jeff Scher
* Teachers I Have Had by Levni Yilmaz
* Dahlia by Michael Langan
* Walks of Life by Cyriak
* Music Box by Mixtape Club

I have included the wittiest of the shorts for your enjoyment, but highly recommend that you click the link and go watch the rest of them. They’re very short, but very interesting.This clip, “Wisdom Teeth,” originally screened at the Sundance Film Festival. Personally, I’m excited that Showtime has given such pieces of art a home.

Wisdom Teeth – Don Hertzfeldt

PS – Now that its out for the world to see, I am fully expecting to see reaction videos for this clip. In the current socio-eco-political era we are in, can you imagine the satirical opportunities out of this one? If someone makes one, don’t forget to share it with me. I’ll post it here for everyone to see!
