ABC Greenlights Another Show From Shonda Rhimes

December 18, 2010

Shonda Rhimes betta work!!!

And JJ Abrams better watch out!!!

I just heard the news that ABC has officially greenlit its first pilot for the 2011-2012 development season. The new show will come from ABC’s go-to producer Shonda Rhimes. With Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and Off the Map all airing on ABC, Rhimes has certainly developed a familial relationship with the network. I can only hope she’s being paid accordingly. Betsy Beers (also of Grey’s and Practice) will co-produce as well.

The show – which is untitled at the moment – will be based on the career of Judy Smith, a veteran crisis management consultant and professional “fixer.” Smith, who will serve as co-executive producer on the project, has worked with many politicians, public figures and so forth, helping re-shape their public personas after major crisis.

If this show gets picked up, Rhimes will cement her place as one of TV’s heaviest of weights (not that she isn’t already looming large now). How many other producers have multiple shows on the air concurrently? How many of them are woman? How many of them are black women? And there you have it. I mentioned Abrams just to draw that subliminal linear line between the two producers. Abrams’ Bad Robot has many irons in the proverbial fire and when news breaks that he has a new show on the way, people get excited. When I heard about Rhime’s possible new gig, I immediately heard bellyaching about her being spread too thin. I that sexist? Racist? Ignorance? You tell me.
