Adele’s Rolling In the Deep

November 24, 2010

The second time around is always the hardest. Fresh off an amazing debut, with millions sold, critics falling all over themselves to find new ways to describe you as amazing and not one, but two Grammy Awards in your pocket, you might have trouble settling down and putting together that second project. It might be easier just to never record again and stay in the halls of history as an amazing force, never to be heard from again (paging Lauryn Hill). Or, it might be just as easy to rush the second project out so you can reap the rewards of name-recognition, no matter the quality (I’m looking at you, Saw 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 47). But for Adele, the teenage girl with the golden voice, no such worries were there. She knows who she is and is following her instincts. If the first dingle – “Rolling In the Deep” – is any indication of what the rest of the disc will sound like, we need not worry. Our girl is back.

Adele’s new album, 21, will be released in early 2011. About the release, Adele says, “I’m very excited, nervous, eager, anxious but chuffed to announce my new album! It’s taken a while and it knocked me for six when writing it.” She goes on to say that while she is dealing with some of the same themes as on her previous album, 19, she is handling them in a different manner. “I deal with things differently now. I’m more patient, more honest, more forgiving and more aware of my own flaws, habits and principles. Something that comes with age I think.” Hence, naming the new project 21. “The reason I called my first album 19 was about cataloging what happened to me then and who I was then, like a photo album you see the progression and changes in a person throughout the years.”

Adele lists a crazy list of artists as her inspiration for 21, that if nothing else, makes for an amazing soundtrack for her life during that period. The artists include:Wanda Jackson, Allison Krauss, Yvonne Fair, Andrew Bird, Neko Case, Lady Antebellum, Steel Drivers, Mary J Blige, Kanye West, Elbow, Mos Def, Alanis Morissette, Tom Waits and Sinead O’Connor. Makes you even more excited, huh?
