Derry-Free Chef Finale

September 16, 2010

Tiffany - why wasn't she in the finale??

Last night’s Top Chef was a mess. But, to be honest, I didn’t care. After my favorite – Tiffany Derry – was cut, I basically quit paying attention. I realize I do that often with competition reality shows. I invest in 2-3 contestants and if they get eliminated, I quit caring. What does that say about the show, itself?

Top Chef is clearly a good show. Seven seasons in and it topples The Amazing Race to win Outstanding Reality-Competition Program at this year’s Emmy Awards. It should be noted that that was based on last season’s impeccable cast, which had talent so deep that their fourth and fifth place finishers could easily have been in this season’s finale. This season, however, has been a mix of lackluster contestants, horrible use of the DC locale (did we really need C.I.A. Director Leon Panetta as a judge?) and… lame challenges. Maybe they have diluted the brand with the addition of Top Chef: Masters (and last night’s debut of Top Chef: Just Desserts). Maybe they need to take a page out of their own book and throw in some twists – like they are always doing to the contestants. Maybe they need to go ahead and have that All-Star edition I have heard rumors about and see if that rejuvenates the brand.

Actually, I love the idea of an All-Star version. Who would they include? The winners, I assume. Carla (Hooty-Hoo!). Richard Blais. Santa Claus AKA Kevin from season 6. Tiffany damn well better be on the list. The guy who gave Hung a run for his money before getting cut too soon… Tre! That’s his name, Tre. Jennifer from season 6. And then maybe throw in a couple of the people who were cut in the opening episodes – they were never given a real chance to show their expertise. Now that show… I would watch until the end. Unless, of course, it came down to Ilan, Hosea and Kevin: three unimpressive winners, if you ask me.

Ok… I rambled. You’ll be all right. What did you think of this season? Who would you include in the All-Star edition? LOL… You know I just made that up, right? We’ll see if they listen.

I’m with you on not being too interested after Tiffany was cut. Clearly a favorite. Home girl won 2 honeymoons and 20k and she wasn’t the angry black woman shown on all reality shows. I liked that everybody had the same proteins for the final challenge but they did need another twist in true top chef fashion.

exactly! i should have mentioned that part too…

      * “that” part would be that Tiffany was not portrayed as an angry black woman. at all.
      * “that” part would also refer to the use of the same proteins.

I totally forgot about the Hosea win…what a loser!!! and i quite honestly didn’t think the mean brother should have won over the good brother last season either. A good season would be called “Top Chef Winners…What Ever Happened to…” Quite frankly the down side of many of these reality competitions is that they don’t tell you what happens to the chefs afterwards and I’m starting to think that NOTHING happens. They wouldn’t want us to know THAT; now would they.
