A Beautiful Innocence

August 16, 2010

You might have seen this picture. But then again, maybe you haven’t. It was snapped by a guy on his cell phone Sunday afternoon in Atlanta and sent out via twitter with the caption: “#NoExcuse I DONT GIVE A FUCK HOW SLEEPY YOU ARE…” In less than 24 hours, it has been retweeted countless times and the picture has been viewed by almost 15,000 people. Several blogs have picked it up, claiming these two guys to be “homo thugs” and pointing out the high rate of HIV infections in African Americans. I am not doing that. I only mention it to emphasize the silliness of their statements.

First, if these guys are thugs, so am I. I dress like that. Maybe not the necklaces, but other than that, I have worn these exact outfits. The problem is that if they were not sitting in this position, there’s a good chance the guy taking the photo would never have had any suppositions about their sexuality. At which point, they wouldn’t have been called thugs. When you bottom line the situation, they are being called homo thugs because they don’t look obviously gay or effeminate in the picture. Which means they are just like you and me. Well, just like straight people. Which means they could easily go around infecting innocent girls with HIV. Because that sounds like fun. What kind of idiot thinks like that? No, seriously? Not all men who sleep with men sleep with women. These guys are in public. Clearly they are not trying to hide anything from anyone.

I applaud you for feeling comfortable enough in your own skin to sit there like that. I wish more people would be like you, so there wouldn’t need to be twitpics and blogs and shit talking about your sexuality. I can only imagine how you feel about this situation, how your families feel… I applaud you. To the two guys: If you want to talk about it, let me know. I will gladly share your opinions with my readers.

Ladies and gentlemen, please recognize A Beautiful Innocence:

Beautifully said! Every gay couple should be free to display their affection as freely and openly as these two. It’s a sorry shame that we still have to contend with so much blind, ignorant hatred. I, too, applaud the couple for their unashamed, courageous act of innocence and love.

Bravo to strength and tenacity, youth and audacity, eracism and veracity! We have to stop talking about stereotypes like OTHER PEOPLE MAKE THEM UP! We do! They aren’t homothugs because they dress this way and therefore are doing something in private that they don’t show in public. These are 2 young brothers, born of struggle and into the hiphop generation for whom this is simply Saturday or Tuesday evening or everyday. The ugly truth for ALL OF US is that we don’t pay attention and celebrate until stereotypes are blown out of the water. Well, thank you young brothers for doing just that and thank you to the idiot whose intention it was to cause scandal and he’s sparked a revolution: GOD PROMISED TO MAKE YOUR ENEMIES YOUR FOOTSTOOL!
