Joi Gets Hot Heavy & Bad

August 14, 2010

Joi. Joi. Joi.

The perpetually underrated, ferociously hyperkinetic, much beloved artist is back. Again. After a five year break (her last release was 2005’s sublime Tennessee Slim is the Bomb), Joi has teamed up with her significant other, Devon Lee, to form a new group – Hot Heavy & Bad. Hot Heavy & Bad will release an album later this year. In the meantime, however, they have gifted us with the video for the lead single, “One.” Recently released at Lee’s Atlanta night club, Pal’s Lounge, “One” has already generated a tremendous amount of buzz and has Joi’s small – but fervent – fan base on fire. With the music industry in a free-fall of sorts, genre-busting, eclectic acts have been pushing their way into the forefront as of late (Janelle Monae, anyone?). I have fingers crossed on both hands that this time’s the charm for our talented seductress.

If you’re not a serious Joi fan and don’t know her backstory, you should definitely read Jacinta Howard‘s cover story on Joi in Atlanta’s Creative Loafing. If you are a serious Joi fan, read it anyway – it’s very good.

Below, the video for “One.”

I LOVE JOI and have all of her albums… so I will have to get Hot Heavy & Bad! What really happened with her and Lucy Pearl, anyway?

i don’t have an answer. i’m thinking that when dawn left, it just threw them and they never managed to make it through, even with joi onboard.

excellent taste in music, as always, sir.
