Sugarland Goes Reggae and GIVES ME MY LIFE

Country music’s genre-pushing duo is back. Sugarland‘s Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush released the video for their lead single off their new album (out October 19) earlier this week and I am living for it. I have watched “Stuck Like Glue” six times already. No, seriously. Nettles deserves to be a major, major star. Fingers crossed.

Sugarland’s upcoming fourth studio album, The Incredible Machine, continues their pop takeover, with songs that belie their country roots. Already, people have been talking – especially country music purists – about the reggae breakdown and Auto-Tune parts in “Stuck Like Glue.” In fact several country music stations have edited out the breakdown, which in my professional opinion is bullshit, double bullshit and triple bullshit, but I don’t work in country radio.

Nettles recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly‘s Whitney Pastorek, telling her:

“[The Auto-Tune] is almost like a comic piece for us,” she said, “because everybody is doing it, and we thought, ‘Oh god, yes. If we’re gonna be able to put it anywhere, please, let’s put it right here.’ It was really just a moment of fun for us in the studio. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh yeah, this is cool.’ It was like, ‘This is hysterical.’ I mean, we’ve already put in a reggae breakdown. Which by the way, it’s not reggae country. It’s a breakdown. I think you’re allowed anything in a musical breakdown. Maybe I do have an inner Sean Kingston, or an inner Bob Marley. Something is going on here, I’m sure of it.”*

Even if you’re not a fan of country music, I say watch it, give it a try. I absolutely love it!
