Celebrating Fried Chicken Day

July 6, 2010

Although Wikipedia does not show a record of such a holiday, and Hallmark has yet to create a card, National Fried Chicken Day happens. And that happens to be today. I know, I know… fried is bad. And it is. But fried chicken is also one of those things unifies the bulk of the world. Much like toilet paper, taxes and oxygen, fried chicken is something that almost every living being has tried at least once. Yes, of course, some people grow up as vegetarians and never get a taste. Which is a shame. I hate to think of a child who has never held a chicken leg (more likely a chicken strip in today’s society) in the air, with grease all over his/her face. It’s like a rite of passage.

As I was looking for an image through Google image search (which, for the record, seriously ranks up there with sliced bread and pay-at-the-pump gasoline), I realized that there are so many ways to enjoy fried chicken, be it on a plate with macaroni and cheese and collard greens (give me that for my last meal if I’m ever on death row. Come to think of it, let’s hope I’m never on death row), or between two pieces of bread like Chick-Fil-A serves it. You can have fried chicken over waffles, or cut up in strips and dip it in BBQ sauce. Eat it Korean-style, Japanese tempura-style, with Chinese five spice, or drowned in country gravy. Put it on a biscuit and have it for breakfast. Chill it and take it on a picnic. Toss it in hot sauce and call it Buffalo Wings. Whatever you do, it will be delicious.

So, today, as you try to decide what to eat, but are feeling a bit gluttinous due to all of that barbecue you scarfed down this weekend, remember that today is a holiday too. Go ahead, have the fried chicken. Just have a salad tomorrow.

This is hee-larious. I didn’t even know that this day existed, but fried chicken is definitely something to celebrate. In fact its the reason I couldn’t stay vegetarian. I tried. But I gotta have my fried goodness from time to time 🙂

In honor of the day, I thought a re-post might be warranted…
