Feel Good Friday: Summertime Music

May 28, 2010

It’s the weekend… and a holiday at that. The official kick-off of summer. Now all we need is a Ballpark frank, some potato salad and DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince‘s Summertime. I can only hook you up with one of them. Although, my potato salad is no joke. But, no, seriously, my good friend Felysha Jenkins and I have discussed on many occasions that summer doesn’t officially start until you play this song… so… here ya go!

And, a little lagniappe for you… a few other songs that scream “SUMMER!” whenever I hear them.

One of the most infectious songs ever recorded: Dancing in the Street by Martha and the Vandellas.

One of the many singles released off of Lauryn Hill‘s career-defining opus, Everything is Everything belongs on the list because the video visually embraces summertime. It might not all be pretty, but it’s the truth.

and last, but certainly not least…

Family Reunion, by Jill Scott. For some inexplicable reason, this song was never released as a single, nor given the video treatment, although I would say it has turned out to be one of Jill’s most enduring (and endearing) hits. Although there was no video, the Brown-Harris family decided to make their own and although I don’t know a soul in the video, it works. I get images of m family from them; you will too.

Enjoy your weekend, my friends.
