Perry Casts His Colored Girls
Last night at the premiere of Tyler Perry‘s Why Did I Get Married Too? the cast of his next project, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf, an adaptation of the Ntozake Shange classic choreopoem, was announced. No word yet on who is playing who, but here’s the cast so far:
Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, Jurnee Smollett, Loretta Devine, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Macy Gray
Hmmmm… there are seven nameless women in the poem – Lady in Yellow, Lady in Blue, Lady in Red, Lady in Purple, Lady in Orange, Lady in Green and Lady in Brown… I can’t help but wonder who gets which role…
The play was written in 1975, detailing what it’s like to be a black female in the current United States. I am intrigued as to how Perry will modify it to acknowledge the 35 years that have passed since. The film comes out in 2011; we’ll know soon enough.
PS – Laugh as you might – and I know plenty of people do when Mr. Perry’s name is brought up – he has an amazing capacity to bring together talent.
