The Hussey Finally Did It

March 18, 2010

Tasha Hussey Designs

First and foremost, Tasha Hussey, the titular “hussey” for this posting, is a dear, dear friend (and fellow Virgo), so don’t let me catch you calling her a hussey. Limbs will be broken.

Tasha Hussey Designs – she’s made [perfectly tailored] clothes for me for years – has expanded into an online jewelry store, as of this morning. Branching out, the website is selling what she calls “upcycled” pieces, which basically marries vintage trinkets and contemporary design. I spoke with Ms. Hussey about the collection and she explained, “I wanted to do something that was representative of me… I am a huge advocate of recycling and using natural products. Using vintage pieces gives them new life. Putting them in a contemporary piece is a way of recycling, but elevating them at the same time, hence the ‘upcycle’ terminology.” The concept is carried through even to the packaging, all of which is 100% recycled.

Ms. Hussey explained that she is using uncirculated vintage pieces, pieces that have set in boxes in factories for the past forty years waiting for someone to recognize the value in them. Judging from what I saw on the website, they have found a great home.

A piece from Hussy’s collection was recently featured in an article on NotCouture.com’s website and sold out immediately. She has pieces lent out to a couple of TV shows that I am not supposed to mention. The upcoming Limelight Marketplace, which is opening this April in Manhattan, will have a store – Old Hollywood Moxie – that carries Hussy’s jewelry.

The website will be evolving as the season unfolds. Ms. Hussy told me that she has “hundreds of different designs,” and will be adding more to the site weekly. So, if you don’t see the piece that you just have to have today, bookmark the site and go back next week and see what she has added. Chances are, you’ll find it eventually.

Jamiacan-born, but currently residing in Atlanta, Tasha Hussy has designed for Usher, Timbaland, Damian Marley and Foxy Brown to name but a few. Lots of basketball players too, as she once said I was short while making a pair of pants for me. She is stepping out of the garment business for the time being, but her jewelry line looks like it has no boundaries. Congratulations.

Delightful jewelry–brilliant sourcing and combinations, Tasha! Love the cuffs, love the turquoise earrings. Will pass this on, thanks.
