Rahbi & KimberlyNichole Show Off in NYC

February 22, 2010

wonder twins UNITE!! Rahbi & KimberlyNichole

Picture it: Sicily, 1932, a small theater filled with people…

Oh, wait. Sorry.

Picture it: Manhattan’s Upper West Side, 2010, a small theater packed like Venus and Serena were about to take the court…

Magic happened. I knew it would. The decision to pair pop-rockers KimberlyNichole and Rahbi was brilliant, as well as the decision to use the always on-point BAAS Group for promotions. Rahbi and KimberlyNichole’s energy pairs like fine wine and a perfectly cooked meal. An outdoor wedding and the month of June. Or, better still, a stick of dynamite and a good match. That pretty much sums up the way they detonated the stage in two rousing performances that were both over the top and perfectly within character at the same time.

If you have never seen Rahbi’s live performance – which apparently half of the audience hadn’t – you need to check his Facebook events calendar and hop a bus/plane/car/train/scooter/hang glider/hot air balloon/something… and get your ass to the show. He’s an ATL guy, so he can usually be seen somewhere in the 404. This kat is what would happen if Prince and Grace Jones had a baby. Well, a tiny baby, because he’s a petite little thing; but, like a good habanero, serious power can come in a small package. His blazing falsetto, onstage theatrics (one can only imagine what his mind would come up with if he had studio money backing him) and fierce delivery set the stage properly for KimberlyNichole and whetted our appetites for more. I could have used a couple more songs before his set ended.

Lights up. Selling CDs. Mingling. Talking. Hugs. Laughter.

KimberlyNichole is onstage. Beat. The hair. The makeup. That coat. Them legs. We gawk. She sings.

I’m gonna fight ’em off
A seven nation army couldn’t hold me back
They’re gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back

The crowd goes in. Off comes the coat. The crowd goes in more. Legs. Legs. More legs. Voice. Hair. Damn. This is a show. The driving beat. The shoes. Did you see the shoes? The crowd is on their feet. Now she is posing. Drag queens can only dream. Tennessee Slim might be the bomb, but KimNicky is the shit. And a star. Period.

We have all heard about the “puff-haired tower of power” (thanks, L. Michael, the moniker sticks); most of us have seen her. That only makes us more excited, because we know what’s about to happen next. Show-stopper after show-stopper, KimberlyNichole’s fans sing every word of every song, just like we do when we go see Mary or Jill in concert. Rahbi had already riled us into a frenzy, and KimNicky takes full advantage of that, taking Rahbi’s handoff and running like Gail Devers at the Olympics. And then, of course, she closed with her now-infamous rendition of Knarls Barkley’s Crazy, which in my humble opinion outranks the original, before heading offstage to chants from the crowd for an encore. Which we got in the form of Jill Scott’s It’s Love.

The night was amazing. Who else pulls a crowd as name-droppable as Valerie Simpson, Nick Ashford, Caron Wheeler, Chinah Blac, Ron Grant, Abby Dobson, Brown Baby Girl’s Lorenda Robinson, Collette (all singers), supermodel Brianna Michelle, choreographer Jonte, and a lot of behind-the-scenes folks for a show for a couple of independent artists? Pretty impressive. Thanks, BAAS Group.
