Review: Ben and Kate
Another new comedy from Fox, Ben and Kate, is being previewed on Hulu. Watch it below and see my comments at the bottom of the page… This preview will only be available through September 9. The show debuts on September 25.
Ben is annoying. So is Kate. So is the British bartender friend (the bit with her and the little girl is funny, though). So is the guy with the afro who is apparently obsessed (yet friends with) Kate. The little girl (Maddie) is cute as can be. She’s not annoying. Actually, she’s the star of the show. And that says a lot. Especially if you give credence to things like Nat Faxon (Ben) is an Oscar-winning screenwriter. Or that Dakota Johnson (Kate) is the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith so she should have acting in her blood. Neither helps them. The script is bad. I’m talking really bad. But, if it gets some work, maybe this cast can come together and lift their game to that of Maggie Elizabeth Jones, the 7-year-old who steals every scene she’s in. She should be in more. I think I’m being clear here.
To be specific, they try to hard. Why would Kate wear a atrocious blue and red fanny pack as a grown ass woman? Why the hockey mask from Friday the 13th? What’s up with that silliness with the straws? Or the hi-fives? I don’t know. It just didn’t work for me. There’s potential, but they have real work to put in before that potential will ever see the light of day.
Will it get a DVR pickup? Absolutely not. But, if I am out of things to watch, I might give it a shot. It would just be easier to wait for Jones to get her own starring vehicle. Ben and Kate airs on Tuesdays at 8:30 PM EST. The pilot will be broadcast on September 25.
